Scholarships

 

The American Legion of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania supports the Constitution of the United States of America and believes that the freedom of its citizens was won through great sacrifice of many who served in the service of their country. Through a scholarship program, Joe Stickell Post No. 15 endeavors to foster Americanism in each generation and strives to maintain and preserve the hard-won freedom through education and understanding, and devotion to community, state and nation.

Milton W. Garland Scholarship

Milton W. Garland was a member of the American Legion of Waynesboro, a Navy veteran of World War I, and an engineer in the refrigeration industry. This scholarship in the area of Science, Mathematics or Engineering was established in his honor.

1. Amount: The amount of the scholarship will be $1,000.00 per year up to four years and will be paid directly to the institution of higher learning.

2. Eligibility:
a. The applicant must reside within the Waynesboro Area School District.
b. The applicant must be enrolled in or have a declared intention to enroll in the bachelor’s program of an accredited post-secondary institution as a full-time student in the field of science, mathematics or engineering.

3. Evaluation:
a. All applications will be evaluated by the Scholarship Committee of the American Legion Post 15.
b. The applicant will be evaluated in three areas: financial need, academic performance, and service activities.
c. A copy of the applicant’s high school transcript, plus two personal references from high school instructors or advisors, must accompany the application.
d. A current, notarized copy of parent’s and student’s income tax returns must also be submitted.

4. Additional Information:
a. The applicant must be accepted by an accredited school prior to payment of scholarship monies.
b. Applications for scholarships will be available in the guidance office of the Waynesboro Area Senior High School by February 1st of each calendar year.
c. Applications must be returned NLT April 15th, 2015 to:

d. If the scholarship recipient withdraws from an educational program before completion, for any reason other than ill health, the scholarship chairman must be notified and the amount of the scholarship must be repaid within six months of withdrawal.

Arthur E. Sanders Scholarship

Arthur E. Sanders was a member of the American Legion of Waynesboro, a graduate of the Waynesboro high school, a member of the United States Marine Corps, a teacher and coach in the Waynesboro Area School District. This scholarship in the area of Teaching, Physical Education, or sports related curriculum was established in his honor.

1. Amount: The amount of the scholarship will be $1,000.00 per year up to four years and will be paid directly to the institution of higher learning.

2. Eligibility:
a. The applicant must reside within the Waynesboro Area School District.
b. The applicant must be enrolled in or have a declared intention to enroll in the bachelor’s program of an accredited post-secondary institution as a full-time student in the field of teaching, physical education, or sports related studies.
